With head coach in place, Colts need a QB

Indianapolis announced former Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen will be the team's new head coach.

This news puts an end to the Jeff Saturday Circus and allows the Colts to focus on what matters most: finding the QB franchise.

The team fired Frank Reich after the Week 9 loss to New England and then appointed the ESPN analyst and former Colts center interim head coach on Saturday. The team finished 4-12-1, the worst record since 2017 (4-12).

The Reich didn't disappoint the Colts as much as the Colts let him down after Andrew Luck's impromptu retirement during the 2019 pre-season.

Reich had to shoulder five different Week 1 starting QBs during his five seasons at Indianapolis. After Luck, the Colts relied on backup picks Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan. That unsustainable team-building method ignited with the disastrous 2022 season.

It's not all doomed in Indianapolis; Thanks to the forgettable season, the organization is poised to draft one of the top QBs in the NFL draft.

Given the success Steichen had with Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, the Colts might feel inclined to trade off the first overall pick and pick Alabama QB Bryce Young. Both QBs are related to the Crimson Tide -- Hurts started his college career in Tuscaloosa -- and both are experts at building something from scratch.

If the Colts hold on to fourth place overall, it could have a choice between Ohio State's CJ Stroud and Kentucky's Will Levis. Stroud might be a better fit; while his strength lies in his ability to pass the ball from the pocket, as he showed against Georgia in the College Soccer semi-final, he is more than capable of making runs when needed.

Steichen inherits an offense that includes Michael Pittman wide receiver and runs against Jonathan Taylor.

Pittman leads the Colts with 99 touchdowns, 925 yards and four touchdowns this season.

Taylor had a bad year in 2022 but led the NFL in rush performance in 2021 with 1,811 yards. Over three seasons, Taylor made 756 hits, 3,841 yards and 33 rush touchdowns.

During Steichen's two seasons as offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, the Eagles placed fifth in this rush in 2022 and led the league in rushing speed in 2021.

Steichen, like Reich, arrived in Indianapolis shortly after serving as Philadelphia's offensive coordinator. Like his predecessor, Steichen's fate depends on the Colts finding QB.
