Underestimating RB position could get Texas star stolen draft

Over the past 15 years, the run-back position in the NFL has depreciated to such an extent that it's almost unheard of to be eliminated early in the draft. And when one is made, the move is often harshly criticized for overdrafting a non-senior position.

That belief could lead to a team in the middle or end of the first round being snubbed at Bijan Robinson of Texas in the 2023 division.

Robinson is not only an electric runner, but he also has the versatility to impact the game in many ways as a runner, catcher and even a tackler. Robinson considers that flexibility a key strength.

"First of all, I feel if you're a guy who can do all three things for your offense, I think that's a very special quality for a player," Robinson said Saturday at NFL combined, via ESPN.

"You put a player in the receiving position, in the slotting position or obviously in the running back position. Just create a mismatch all over the field and maybe create space for yourself.. It's a high value that everyone should consider."

Running backwards has depreciated for two reasons. First, it's the position with the shortest career average in the NFL. Players burn out quickly due to slot wear, so you won't get to the top from that player even if you pick. The second is that it's almost entirely a team-dependent position. If you have a good line of attack and a good passing game, chances are your runs will be successful no matter where you pick them. In that case, it might be easier and more logical to find a player later in the draft and put them in an attacking position.

In terms of pure talent and co-production, Robinson was probably one of the best players in the draft but will almost certainly still be in the middle, or maybe even late in the first half. A team that was ready in many places could grab him and use him in a Christian McCaffrey-type role and get a superstar to make their attack more dynamic.
