Ravens place non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson
Still unable to work out a long-term contract extension with superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens opted to book a non-exclusive franchise card for him by Tuesday's deadline.
That sets the stage for what could be a fascinating season in Baltimore and around the NFL.
By placing a non-exclusive card on Jackson, Jackson has the opportunity to negotiate with other teams around the NFL once the free agent contract period begins.
If Jackson played for Baltimore as a franchise, his salary for the 2023 season would be $32 million.
Because he's given the freedom to talk to other teams, it's possible that someone could do something Raven hasn't been able to do for the past year and a half, which has actually come to terms with Jackson. contract.
If that happens, the Ravens will have two choices: match the offer and thank another team for doing their work for them, or allow Jackson to walk away and get two draft picks back. the first round as a compensation.
The former option seems to be the most logical end game here. As tempting as the two first-round draft picks, Jackson has more value to Raven than that. Sure, they could use that newly found draft capital to make a move in the draft to find a replacement, but the odds of that replacement being at Jackson's level are slim. Without Jackson, Raven's offense simply doesn't work, and it would require almost a complete rebuild of the team's play to be worthy of a newcomer.
Since the start of the 2018 season, Raven is 8-14 without Jackson in the starting midfield and 46-18 with him (including knockouts). It's not easy to replace that, even if you have plenty of first-round draft picks at your disposal.
