Three QB targets for Raid after Derek Carr release
On Tuesday, the Raiders launched Derek Carr, leaving them without a viable starter in midfield. The only QB under the contract is 23-year-old Chase Garbers, who has never crossed a career .
According to OverTheCap, the Raiders have a cap of $48.4 million, which ranks third in the NFL, allowing them to add QB through trade or free agency. With 7 overall pick, the Raid can also pick their next QB in the draft.
Here are three goals that Las Vegas should pursue.
Jimmy Garoppolo, free agent
Raiders HC Josh McDaniels may prefer Garoppolo, who played for McDaniels when he worked as offensive coordinator in New England.
Garoppolo is efficient - his career passing 99.6 ranks sixth among active passers - but he is prone to injury, playing only one season in nine years. Also, he's recovering from a broken leg in Week 12, so Las Vegas must have a solid backup.
Garoppolo is expensive, especially for a player without Pro Bowls. According to Spotrac, his market value is a four-year contract worth $34.9 million annually.
Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
Rodgers may retire, but if he comes back, the Raiders can trade him. According to The Athletic's Matt Schneidman, Green Bay wants two first-round picks for the 18-year-old veteran - a hefty price tag for a 39-year-old QB nearing the end of his career.
Rodgers' contract swallows the bounds of space. He has two years left and is guaranteed $59.5 million by 2023, per OTC.
However, imagine a Rodgers-Davante Adams reunion. In eight seasons together, the parallel has connected with each other in 69 times TD. Adams recently told Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal that playing again with Rodgers would be a "dream scenario".
CJ Stroud, Ohio State
On TikTok with the recent Boardroom, Stroud suggested he'd like to team up with Adams, the six-time pro pitcher,
Stroud has a skill set suitable for Raid gamers.
"Stroud could be the best fit of all the QBs with McDaniels as he can win with ball placement and accuracy," wrote Pro Football Focus's Marcus Mosher.
Stroud threw 85 TDs in two seasons at Ohio State. However, he doesn't play professionally attacking style, so he may have a longer learning curve and may not be a Day One starter.
