Raiders agree to sign Jimmy Garoppolo, but is he the long-term answer?

The Raiders have found a starting QB for 2023, but is he the long-term answer to the franchise?

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini, former 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo and Las Vegas have agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million deal with a $34 million guarantee.

Las Vegas only has one QB under contract (Chase Garbers), so it needs a viable starter. Garoppolo is a solid pick as he has a 40-17 starting record in nine seasons and played under Raiders HC Josh McDaniels when he was a New England OC.

But he is not the permanent answer.

Although Garoppolo led the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV, he benefited from a talented roster that included three-time Pro Bowl DE champion Nick Bosa. In his six seasons in San Francisco, Garoppolo never made a Pro Bowl and only threw more than 20 TDs once.

In addition, injuries have limited him throughout his career. Garoppolo missed eight games last season with a broken foot, missed 10 games in 2020 with an ankle injury, and missed 13 games after tearing the ACL in 2018.

The 49ers have no qualms about selecting his potential replacements in the 2021 and 2022 NFL drafts in Trey Lance and Brock Purdy.

Las Vegas should consider picking a QB with a 7th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. According to ESPN's Jordan Reid, four QBs in the draft have first-round scores: Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis.

According to Tankathon, Las Vegas will pick Kentucky's Levis in the first round.

Reid writes: “Levis has all the physical characteristics needed in this position and McDaniels is the ideal man to nurture his growth.

The combination of Garoppolo and an early QB below him will solidify the future of the organization in a place that matters most.
