NFL Draft 2023: 10 diamonds in the rough

Early picks get most of the hype when included in the draft, but it's later picks that can make all the difference in a final Super Bowl. These 25 players could be the diamonds in the rough in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Sydney Brown , S, Illinois

Illini's twin brother re-run Chase Brown, Sydney had a breakout senior season and continued to increase his numbers in the Senior Bowl. He ends 2022 with 60 tackles, 6 interceptions and 7 saves. Brown can be a Day 2 pick and an immediate contributor.

Andre Carter II, EDGE, Army

Carter's shares drop slightly after 2022, with his sack count dropping from 14.5 in 2021 to 3.5. However, he has enough size and speed to be a next-level impact crosser, and can make it to the first round with a good mix.

Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama

There aren't many full-backs with Gibbs' pace and passing ability. He finished 1,370 yards from the script and 10 points in a season with Alabama after moving from Georgia Tech. Gibbs could be the next level Tony Pollard-like game changer.

Jake Haener , QB, Bang Fresno

Pocket passers-by aren't in vogue anymore, but Haener is a solid NFL prospect nonetheless. He has impressed at the Senior Bowl after completing 72% of his passes in the regular season and has been a consistent player over the past three seasons. Deck is a solid backup in the NFL.

Derick Hall, DE, Auburn

Hall isn't big enough to play defensively in a 4-3, but his ability to rush the ball is fun. He's had 15.5 caps over the past two seasons and that's more than enough when playing on the track. The lobby can be a steal point when selected at the end of Day 1 or the beginning of Day 2.

Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee

Hooker has two big shocks against him, as he recovers from a torn ACL injury in November and is 25 years old. The advantage, however, was huge, as Hooker showed off the move plus Virginia Tech and Tennessee, and an incredible 69.6% pass accuracy. completion rate and 27/2 TD/INT last season. As for the patient franchise, Hooker could grow into a quarterback starting Day 2 of the draft.

Andrei Iosivas, WR, Princeton

Iosivas will have some stereotypes, but the 6-foot-3 athletics star will excite a lot of wide-record coaches. He was just 1,000 yards short at Princeton last season, and could be a big next-level deep threat.

Thomas Incoom, OLB, Central Michigan

There are not many more effective passing tools than Incoom. He had 11.5 tackles and 19 tackles when he lost at Central Michigan last season, and had the athleticism to push up the draft.

Tucker Kraft , TE, South Dakota State

FCS's hesitation in choosing a tight finish could have been resolved by the success of Dallas Goedert and Kraft was likely to follow in his footsteps. Kraft opened his eyes when he hit 780 yards in 2021, despite missing time last year through injury. He can still be an influential player from later rounds.

Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa

Iowa has become a tight factory in recent years with the likes of George Kittle, Noah Fant and TJ Hockenson. LaPorta could be next, with more than 600 yards received in consecutive years despite the Hawkeyes' anemic error.
